Signs a profile might be fake
The photos look professional.
Model-quality photos, very few pictures, or pictures that don't match each other are common on fake profiles. A reverse image search usually settles it.
They want to leave the app straight away.
Scammers push you onto WhatsApp or Telegram early, where they can't be reported or removed.
They avoid video calls.
A broken camera, bad network or a busy job every single time. Real people can manage two minutes on video.
It moves too fast.
Intense compliments, talk of marriage or 'destiny' within days, and a story that seems built to earn your sympathy.
Scams to watch for in India
The gift or customs parcel.
They say they've sent you an expensive gift from abroad. Then a 'courier' or 'customs officer' calls asking for a clearance fee. There is no parcel.
The emergency.
A sudden hospital bill, a stuck payment or a lost wallet while travelling, and they need money urgently, just this once.
The investment tip.
They're doing well from crypto, forex or a trading app and offer to teach you. Early small 'profits' are fake; the money you add can't be withdrawn.
Sextortion.
An intimate video call or photo swap, then a threat to share the recording with your family unless you pay. Don't pay. Paying almost always leads to more demands.
The OTP or UPI 'refund'.
Any request for an OTP, a UPI PIN or a screen-sharing app is a scam. You never need a PIN to receive money.
What to do if it's happening to you
Stop, and don't send anything more.
Don't pay, don't argue and don't warn them. Save screenshots of the profile, chats and payment details first.
Report and block.
On Northearts, report from the profile or chat. It takes under 30 seconds and the person is never told who reported them.
Tell your bank straight away.
If you've paid, call your bank at once and ask them to block or reverse the transaction. Speed matters.
File a cybercrime complaint.
Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. It's not your fault: these scams are run by organised groups who do this every day.
